With the Space at your back, your next step lands on the soil of a winding footpath. It seems you just missed a sunshower: light shines through the raindrops clinging to the lush canopy overhead, dappling the ground and your fellow travelers in midday sun. Trees are in full flourish everywhere you look, filling the air with the light fragrance of fruit and flowers. Fresh breezes contrast with the warming spring air, and birdcalls overlap softly with a burbling, full stream. In the distance, the sound of wooden wheels shake down a packed dirt road. If you peek through the vegetation, you may be able to make out ornate carriages drawn by oxen or horse. Smaller wooden rickshaws weave through the traffic, and if you're lucky, you may spot one of the rare cars (not a seatbelt in sight!) puttering its way through.
As Original Individuals take inventory of the world around them, they'll realize that there's a letter in their pocket...?
Or Are You Just Happy to See Me? (˵ ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°˵)
(*´ω`)o Here we go again! This might be a refresher for some of you buuuuut!
If you want any chance of going home again, to your family, friends, loyal dog or whatever, you're all gonna have to try to put yourselves back together! The easiest way to do that is to regain the pieces of yourself that you've lost - and those pieces are gonna be more likely drawn to your soul the more you feel.
That's right! Feelings! You lone wolf types are probably shaking! (ꐦ ಠ皿ಠ )
The same is true for all your sweet ol' friends who have tapped into the alternate version of themselves here. (」゜ロ゜)」 They have to experience meaningful moments in order to regain pieces of themselves too! So laugh! Cry! Question your meaning for living! Don't lose sight of the goal which is to just like, experience stuff really. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ All you've got is each other!
Don't get too downtrodden if they don't recognize you right away though - your bonds will never be broken, true friends are never that far apart, kyahhh. o(*≧□≦)o .... aka they're more likely to want to talk to you than you think.
And besides, you'll only all be able to make it home if you all collectively regain enough pieces of yourselves. ヾ(o✪‿✪o)シ
Yayyyyyyy. (ノ´ヮ´)ノ*:・゚✧ Teamwork. Make use of Home Base to touch base with each other if you can!
(*・▽・*) A. Ny. Who.
Welcome to Kōun, the Blessed Country. Look out overhead. (・□・;)
Original Characters will then find themselves with a semi-brief summary of what their Remixed life would have been - and this time around it includes a helpful sentence blurb for each of their relationships to others, as well as the climate of the town around them, recent politics included. For those of you who haven't crafted possible Remixed lives, you'll only get:
( ⚆ _ ⚆ ) Um… Backstory not found?
Just do yourself a favor and don't wander onto the wrong side of town. Kind of a big deal around here. Whoa! Deja vu!
The tiny country of Kōun, so named for its lucky and prosperous lands, sprawls out before you. A few steps in and the path splits off, leading in two directions. One branch goes toward the oceanside town of Umite, while the other heads up to the mountainous town of Yamate.
Umite offers a vivacious scene. The weather here is warmer with very little cloud coverage most days, but the sun is tempered by a constant, cooling breeze. The ports are noisy and hopping with business. Bars and restaurants are always full, and parties and gatherings often spill out onto the streets. Here, humans and demons thrive together with minimal conflict. You're just as likely to run into demon employees and patrons as you are human ones in any given establishment. Houses and businesses are often only one or two floors tall and closely packed together, made primarily of bamboo and sturdy woods. Many locals take to decorating their places with wind chimes, colorful fortune kites, and banners. Modern amenities like electricity and plumbing are also common.
Head out to the white sand beaches and you'll find a large and popular bonfire area used for picnics, sunset drinks and fireworks after dark. Up the boardwalk is a small aquatic history museum for those who need a break from the liveliness of the town. It offers intriguing displays of fossils and preserved specimen of ancient, long-gone creatures. Clusters of boating merchants gather around docks and ports, waving and giving a jovial holler to people who pass by. They sell everything from deliciously fresh fruits and fish to hand-crafted pots to exquisite jewelry from their floating shops. From sunrise to well after sunset, Umite is alive and bustling. But surely there's more to these towns than meets the eye.
Yamate provides a stark contrast. With the forest's canopy so thick in the mountains, the sun offers less heat the deeper you travel. The light here is thin and the temperature is on the cooler side year-round. There's a tendency for fog and mist to gather around its peaks. Locals to this area have not had as much exposure to cultural blends as Umite, so tension between humans and demons is more palpable here, and people seem a little more likely to keep to themselves in general. The businesses and homes of Yamate are much more spread out and spacious, with the building materials of choice being white marble and stone. Residents seem to favor pristine appearances and clean aesthetics, along with open-air designs and high ceilings. It's quite common to find a shop or home with glass-less windows and patios that open directly into the surrounding forests.
One of the biggest draws of Yamate is an enormous meditation chamber. It offers patrons the chance to calm their minds in times of stress, clean their energy, and center their spirits. Another popular destination is the acoustics hall located between the two oldest trees in the forest. It's a perfect place for any musically-inclined folks to practice their instruments or de-rust their pipes, as it offers perfect resonance. Further up in the mountains, an expansive bonsai garden is open to the public. In addition to rare species of trees and a legendary sakura that blooms off-season, there are many unique sculptures donated by a local famed volcanic glass artist before their passing. You may also hear some stray rumors about cursed castle ruins. Hidden high on a forgotten mountain peak, this castle supposedly devours anyone foolish enough to enter its walls, with a preference for newborns... but it's probably nothing to worry about. Unless you want to take a peek inside?
Connecting both sides of the country from the mountain peaks to the ocean are a network of rivers that vary in size. Some are barely large enough to be considered rivers, while others have fast-moving currents and are tens of feet deep. Buildings along the waterfronts here are often raised on stone walls or stilts in the event that the rivers swell, which they often do during the rainy seasons. Networks of much smaller streams branch off between rivers, cutting paths through the forests and towns. At the halfway point between Yamate and Umite, one river leads to a gorgeous, mid-sized waterfall. Rumor has it that this waterfall has magical properties.
On each side, there is a small post office that you can drop letters and parcels off at for delivery. Strangely, the sole deliveryman and two overseers of the offices seem to bear an uncanny resemblance to each other... You can also find one single ancient computer nestled in each town's respective library. Despite the fact that there are only two in the whole country, they don't seem to be very popular just yet. Maybe that has to do with the fact that you can only use them to play Pong. Every now and then, they may also serenade you with The Dial-up Screech™. Enjoy!
Beyond that, regardless of where you travel and what you get up to, both sides of Kōun seem to be bustling with a little extra energy lately. There's plenty of buzz about the upcoming Demon Market Grand Opening from stall owners and prospective customers alike, and some people may pull you over to poll you on what you want to see out of it. More food stalls? Less unruly foot traffic? The world is your oyster! The Night of Demons Parade that will happen several weeks after it also seems to be generating a lot of excitement.
You might also catch wind of a meteor shower set to light up the sky at night - but you know what they say about curiosity and cats, don't you? Anyone outside when this shower hits may find that it's much larger than anticipated, with several flashes and flares of light rocketing straight toward the ground. Though no one is killed and mass destruction doesn't seem to be the goal, one thing is clear... This tiny country is in for some big changes. The gods presiding over it have decided to test its dedication to peace and coexistence, and with this, they offer the start of their challenge: Humans (OU and AU alike) who are too close to these falling meteorites may find themselves transforming into demons. Some change all at once, while others transform slowly over time. That same night, three demons among you will develop unusual physiological differences and abilities, chosen by the gods to become Maou.
That evening, everyone will share the same dream. A swirling darkness that will begin to encroach on their most beloved places - where they might have grown up or shared in vulnerable moments with friends. A shadow that begins to envelop their loved ones until they're disappeared into dust - or an image of their corpse flashes before their eyes, withered and rotten. When they wake up, even though they might not knowhow to fix their problem, they'll know that they are meant to search for the Maou. Any additional answers might take a bit of investigating.
With the stage set, it's time to see if Kōun can live up to its name.

sweats nervously
Shizun! [ he reaches out for him immediately, trying to soothe any worries. he'd unintentionally found himself cover here amongst the many, many demons of umite, and it's a temporary blessing.
binghe tugs the hat down further over the ears (which are now drooping under the hat), shoulders hunching where he's standing like he's trying to make himself a little smaller. he's going to have to lie to shen qinggiu, which is his absolute worst skill, and his least favorite thing to do in the whole wide world. ] I'm helping someone in town, I'm alright.
[ he winces to himself. sorry, shizun.... this disciple doesn't deserve your worry..... he'll explain soon..... ]
:relieved but louder:
I'm glad. This teacher was worried when you sent no word.
[ he didn't spend years keeping you alive to have you vanish when the world tried to explode, binghe! ]
How much more is there to do? I have a task for you when you're done.
anxiety dog shaking hours
[ oof. now that he wants to jump off of a cliff for hurting shizun--he was worried--he can at least take the distraction. he jumps at the chance, glancing one last furtive look over his shoulder before he nods, straightening back up. ] I can take on the task now, though. I'll do so quickly--what does shizun need?
it's gonna be Fine.
You may as well finish your other tasks first. I suspect mine may take quite a while. [ his eyes flick to the town itself, indicating quietly what he has in mind. it also gives binghe ample time to figure his shit out before shizun gives him the 'i'm not mad, just disappointed' faces so hm! it's quite the gift ]
is it
no, no. he deserves the scolding anyway, the unhappy faces. he shifts, rubbing his hand against his arm, shoulders drooping further. binghe looks even more like a kicked puppy than he did five minutes ago. it has the plus side that the ears droop a little further under his hat, making them blend more evenly into his massive curly hair. ] Shizun's task is more important than the pithy things this disciple was doing.
[ he ducks his head, a bit lower. ] If you would let me help now, I would be grateful. [ :c ]
absolutely (not)
Then you have time to accompany me through the town? I wish to check up on everyone. [ are you willing to spend that much time with this teacher right now? ] Then, there is also the matter of our roof........
[ if you look up, there's a bolder sized hole hanging out. haha, rip ]
no subject
the rage that hits him is so intense it's almost staggering, and binghe has to stop himself from overreacting. he grips at his own sleeve, tight, looking up at the hole of the bamboo house. he'll kill that meteor shower (?) with his bare hands (???)
but. it presents an opportunity. he can still help shizun while letting his charade last a little bit longer. that calms some of the anger almost immediately, and distressed, he looks from the roof to shizun. ] I--I can take care of the roof, shizun. I'll have it fixed as soon as possible, the draft could make you catch a cold.
[ unusual for him to pick the option of less shizun, but it is what it is. ]
no subject
If that is what you wish to do first.
[ it also gives him ample time to observe his wayward apprentice when he gets into the groove and thus drops his guard a little so bonus sneaky points to him! he's still got it! ]
I'll take care of what needs to be done down here until you are finished. [ and that way he can (mostly) pretend to putter around while keeping a sharp eye out. honestly, at this point, he's fretting that binghe's hiding an injury but something tells him that's not it entirely. ]
no subject
but!!! he's completely unaware of shizun being clever and sneaky, instead just relieved he's going to get a minute to get away from his scrutinizing, which is absolutely the worst feeling in the entire world. he berates himself about it most of the way to the bamboo house--it looks like he has a black cloud hanging over his head, he's so morose about it--but, at least it's another day with this strange, demonic secret still kept safe.
(what would he do, if shizun if abandoned him? wouldn't he stop wanting to be around him? of course he would. everyone else did at even the hint of him being a demon.)
so!!! with the kind of effortlessness that only luo binghe can pull off, he's up to the roof in a matter of minutes, rolling the sleeves of his robe up with a cloth to get to work on patching up this roof! look at him, so rife for the staring. at his, confusing behavior, not his arm muscles. ]
no subject
the armshim work, a faint frown wrinkling his brow as he does. clearly, there's something up. he'd have to be (more) blind, mute and deaf to miss it. honestly, he's acting more like his heart has been broke-DID HE GET REJECTED BY A MAIDEN?? WHO WOULD TURN DOWN A STUD LIKE LUO BINGHE? HE'D FIGHT THEM HIMSELF-
ahem.
shizun is rooting for you binghe!! everything will be fine!! first loves are always hard.......! ]
no subject
well, he didn't get rejected by a maiden. he hasn't been rejected by anyone! (recently!) it's the perceived rejection that's making him so gloomy. he's so sure the moment that shizun finds out what's wrong he'll be kicked to the curb. but he doesn't want to be kicked to the curb--shen qingqiu is the best thing that's ever happened to luo binghe, and the idea of him finally wising up like everyone else did around him is his worst nightmare.
not to mention, that awful dream that happened last night? what if he caused that?
...yeah, he's gloomy. that tail that's stuffed into the back of his robes? drooping. his ears? drooping, underneath that hat. hard to see from a distance, but there's something white sticking out of the side of the hat that doesn't belong amongst his mountain of black curls. let him sit here and just... work on the roof... sadly... plays world's smallest violin ]
no subject
anyways, since he's quietly cheering binghe on in his heart and completely ignoring his own chores, shizun actually is staring hard enough at the right time to notice the slight..... oddity on his head. HM. Concerning.
(THAT ISN'T A BANDAGE IS IT? BINGHE ARE YOU REALLY HIDING AN INJURY FROM ME-?)
onmyoji's have abilities to cause a little breeze right......... it's basically his au naruto magic after all.....
what if he just.... takes.. advantage... of that... ]
no subject
so absorbed in his moping, binghe does not even notice the little breeze magic. he's bent over the roof, hammering down a nail, when it catches the brim of his hat and ruffles all of his curls.
he realizes about three seconds too late. the hat sails off of his head, and though he doesn't yelp, he makes an awfully undignified (what happened to his golden protagonist aura) scramble to try and catch it and shove it back on his head. the entire thing lasts maybe thirty seconds, but it's long enough: the fluffy dog ears, one white, one black, stand straight up on his head in his surprise.
he grabs the hat and looks around, furtive, like maybe shizun didn't see... but it's too late. he sure does have a pair of new features, doesn't he. ]
no subject
but that sure is a new surprising development! shen qingqiu drops the fan entirely when he realizes what exactly has been hidden from him. oh no, they're cute...!
...............wait. waitwaitwait
DOG EARS?! WHAT. WHAT!! BINGHE WHAT DID YOU DO- ]
no subject
by which i mean, yeah, those sure are dog ears. binghe has since pulled the hat back on top of them, his shoulders hunching up. as he realizes that shizun must not have seen him (thank goodness), he slowly relaxes and returns to his work.
when he turns to go patch up part of the roof, the lump at the back of his robes is suddenly much more obvious: it's a tail. ]
no subject
in the meantime, with his fan already forgotten on the floor, his jaw drops instead. a tAIL?! THAT'S A TAIL.
BINGHE, WHAT CURSED POND DID YOU FALL INTO!?
............oh my god, is this the work of him growing into his yokai status- did he suddenly mature overnight??? is this what you would call growing pains?! (SHIZUN IS VERY PROUD BUT INCREDIBLY CONCERNED HE NEEDS TO HAVE THE TALK NOW) ]
no subject
he works for a little while longer unhindered. still, that feeling never quite goes away, and eventually, he looks back up again, away from the roof work. still holding onto the hammer he'd found in the house, he makes direct eye contact with shen qingqiu.
and tilts his head. you know. like a dog. aroo? ]
no subject
of course, it also means he has to contend with the fact that it also comes with staring at the incredibly pure expression on his apprentice's face right now, and thus this teacher looks more like he's losing the will to live than shook about this newfound knowledge. ]
no subject
binghe's confused expression shifts, his brows knitting together, worry blatant across his face immediately. going from confused dog to kicked puppy in about a second. the fear of this newfound knowledge grabs him around the heart and squeezes, so tight for a moment it feels like he can't breathe.
he saw. shizun is too smart not to have noticed. the expression on his face says he's --he's disappointed. he looks upset. every voice in that village was right: after everything, binghe was a demon child, and shen qingqiu was sheltering him. shizun believed in him, that he wasn't going to end up that way, and he--
his fingers curl tight against the hammer he's holding, paralyzed with the bone shaking realization that this could be it. that the very fear luo binghe holds deepest in his heart could become a reality. there's not a chance shizun would want him around. it was stupid of him to think he could hide it.
it's a long moment of staring before he finally tears his gaze away, staring down at the hole in the roof, trying to act as normally as possible. maybe if he kept -- if he just kept doing what he was supposed to, if he kept helping, it would be fine. maybe if he kept being good, shizun wouldn't throw him aside. for a moment, it hurts to breathe. it just hurts. ]
no subject
oh no.
is he mad that he saw? he wasn't trying to peek!! ...okay, so maybe curiosity did get the best of him but this teacher truly was worried... the pure white lotus expression is one he does his best to protect after all! anything that harms it is an affront to him!
but now he's worried for entirely different reasons. should he call out to him? should he stay silent? what if he makes it worse!!! there really is no guidebook on 'so the boy you rescued all those years ago turned out to actually be a demon' after all, this is completely uncharted territory.
maybe he'll just wait for binghe to
sadlyfinish working first ]no subject
in fact, if shen qingqiu is really paying attention, he will notice the way binghe keeps hiding his head, or how he's staring down at his work with even more focus than normal, or how he keeps reaching up to his face.
because he's crying. he can't help it. they're huge, fat, baby tears, and he sits there and cries onto his hand and all over the roof part that he's patching in, because this is it. shizun is finally going to abandon him. maybe he'll exorcise him, or kill him. it might put him out of his misery. :( ]
no subject
sqq? doesn't know? how to handle this? HIS FAN, FORMERLY ABANDONED ON THE FLOOR- gets immediately swiped up so he can start fanning the anxiety away. clearly he should be doing more than what he is now but first, he must scream. ]
Binghe.
[ ......... or he could do that instead. it's fine. anyways, if (haha, big if) Bingbing turns around, Shizun gestures for him to come back to him instead of just flopping over and expiring up there on the roof like the worlds worst roof ornament ]
no subject
but. when shizun calls him again, he lifts his hand to wipe at his eyes, sucking in any more tears and looking down to the gesture. obediently, he turns to make his way back down from the roof, hopping down to land in front of him. up close, he looks just as pathetic, his big dark eyes wet with tears. the ears are underneath his hat, still drooping down so low they can almost be seen.
he bows his head, waiting for the rejection, the inevitable. maybe shizun will be the one to put him out of this existence, like he was supposed to all those years ago.]
no subject
his arm stretches out, hovering for a moment before patting binghe on the head, hat and all. there, there don't cry. shizun is here. ]
I assume this is what you've been upset about then?
[ he wants to pet them........ ]
no subject
demonic abyssearly grave, it will have been better than what had awaited him when he was a child. he takes a breath when he hears the shuffle of fabric that must be shen qingqiu moving, holds it-- and binghe's eyes snap open, and he's left staring at the ground, absolutely stunned.the hand touches his head, and he inhales again, like he'd forgotten to breathe.
slowly, he looks up, looking so vulnerable, so, so young, the shine like stars in his eyes highlighted by the tears that begin to track down his cheeks. he can't believe the absolution he's being given; a part of him still wonders if shizun will end his life where he stands. just one last little mercy.
he says, unsteady, voice rough. ] Shizun, it's... they're... [ they're demonic. he can tell, can't he? it just takes him back to his village, back to when they first met, an angry mob and luo binghe, a cursed young man who caused their problems. ] They were right.
