( AND SO IT BEGINS. )

There's nothing but the clatter of train tracks, and the odd feeling of almost floating.

When you wake, it's hard to tell exactly what it is that you're missing - only that you are. There are pieces that aren't quite right, even if you're not sure where those pieces would normally be. Pieces of what, exactly....? Well, if you had to put a word to it, it would be - yourself, probably.

The place you've found yourself in is strange, certainly. It's probably worth exploring a bit. Though it just as easily seems that the only form of welcome or explanation that you have, comes from nothing more than a slab of marble.

Well - that, and all the people who seem to have woken up alongside you, lost and also probably Doing Their Best™.

There's no need to fret that much though. It's hard to say exactly where you're going next, even though some places might feel a little bit more like a clue, but what you do know is one unshakeable thing:

There's still much more ahead of you.

[Look, almost anyone can be a cultivator in his world if they try hard enough!! He'll be Kano's personal cheerleader on his journey to lighting fire talismans.]

More or less - you don't really want to use something with spent energy, you know? [It's probably bad karma on top of just not being The Best It Can Be.

He nods toward the one in Kano's hand.] That one's still good, though! I wouldn't hand you a spent talisman, haha.

[Wouldn't he, though??]

[ Maybe he can have learned fire magic in the olympics au and come running up to Wei Wuxian going "look, look!!" and immediately set his robes on fire ]

He~h... I'll keep practicing with it, then~ Maybe I just gotta fuel up so I can have enough energy to light it! Gotta stock up on ice cream and poptarts~

[Please do Wei Wuxian will be so damn proud of his tiny terror cousin, the actual living menace.]

Who knows! There are plenty of paths for cultivation; if you strike out and find your own, it would be something worth celebrating indeed!

[ He is going to learn a little bit of every single magic but can only do stupid things with it, like setting clothes on fire and keeping popsicles frozen so they don't melt in the summer ]

[ He is going to find a lighter in the store later so he can toast his own poptarts. In the meanwhile, though, there's not much he can do but sit back and jiggle the talisman around in his pocket a little. He sure hopes he doesn't accidentally tap into latent powers while it's in his pocket. ]

There is so much happening here though, oh my god. Kano is his favorite. This is terrible. What a gremlin child??]

Haha, perfect! When you say things with conviction, it automatically gives you more power!

[THAT'S NOT HOW ANYTHING WORKS and yet he says it with such conviction, himself. What an idiot. ANYWAY, deciding he's spent enough time in this chaos chicken car, he'll just snatch up a napkin to wrap a few more wings up into and then nod forward.]

That's right! It's confidence or bust~!!

[ The loudest person wins! Whoever gets the last word is correct! These are the rules of men. Also people like Kano who has absolutely nothing to back up his bs besides conviction.

Anyways, it's forward march out of this car and into the next. There is a disco ball spinning on the ceiling and rap music playing in the background and the snack bar consists of nothing but alcohol and Chex mix. ]

[DANA GIVE US THE VOID LORE

Kano is valid (to Wei Wuxian and Wei Wuxian only probably) for his great logic. He's gonna get far in life like that and if he doesn't get far he's gonna get dead spectacularly, probably. Win-win! You get a good story out of it either way!

This cart is wild though, wow. He's immediately poking through the alcohol bottles.]

Is this sort of thing normal? It's definitely the kind of room you won't forget easily...! [GESTURING AT THE DISCO BALL... then at a bowl of chex mix. Which he just shoves a hand into like he's fishing for a fortune. After taste-testing a piece:] —Salty.

[ It sure is... a room! Kano can't say whether it's normal, but it's definitely unforgettable that there's a bar right here inside the train. ]

Aah, these are the ones you want. The break-your-teeth chips~

[ The super hard rye chips that are like eating slices of rock but it's somehow fun anyways. Those are the best. Kano lays a couple out on a napkin to show Wei Wuxian which ones, and then proceeds to pick up a bar stool and set it directly underneath the disco ball.

...He picks up another stool and sets it on top of that one. ]

Alright! You're tall, so how 'bout you see if you can get the flashy ball down? I won't let you fall!

[BREAK YOUR TEETH CHIPS?? He's curious though, naturally, and sticks one carefully between his back teeth to chew on. Fortunately it's not quite as hard as he'd been expecting, even if it makes a resounding and concerning crack rather than a crunch when he bites down fully.]

—The flavor isn't bad, though! I can see why you want these.

[He scoops up a few more before wandering over to where Kano is creating a pile of chairs.]

Hm, hm - any particular reason why you want it? Not that I'm against getting it for you! It just seems like a fair amount of effort, you know?

Mm. It's shiny so I want it?

[ What are good reasons? Kano is a proponent of collecting junk and then finding a use for them after the fact. He holds the legs of the top stool so it doesn't slip off, waiting for Wei Wuxian to climb on. He can probably use the rock chips to hammer the ball off the ceiling. ]

We're never gonna come back to this car, right? An opportunity like this, it'd be really too bad if we just walked by and left it alone!

[Any normal person would be like "I am tired and not going along with these shenanigans" but NOT WEI WUXIAN.]

Haha! How honest. [HILARIOUS. That alone is reason enough for him to oblige... He'll step carefully onto the bottommost stool, waiting to make sure Kano has a good grip before ascending up to The Disco Ball™. The chaos orb...]

These things aren't delicate, are they? I don't want to risk breaking it.

[ Normal people suck, Wei Wuxian is the best.

Kano laughs a little at his honesty being pointed out— because really, there's nothing funnier than that— but he's got a good grip on the stool and his feet planted so nobody slips and falls and cracks their heads open until after this disco ball is taken down. ]

It's fine, it'e fine~ I dunno how delicate it is, but if it breaks, we'll just fix it! I think we got enough ketchup for minor repairs! Don't worry about it~

[He sure is trying. Making some sort of vague effort. For what gain?? Who knows, not even he can figure that one out! But maybe they'll get a disco ball out of it and honestly what more could someone ask for in life.]

What a wonderfully versatile condiment! But I do think it would be best to conserve our ketchup and avoid showering ourselves in shattered- [Whatever this thing is made from. ...He taps it curiously once he's close enough to stretch out and touch it??] -glass? Maybe?

[HM. WELL!! He'll just be extra careful as he finally gets to the top of this precarious stack. He feels around the top of the disco ball but he doesn't know what screws are so rip.]

--Might be easier to just pry it from the ceiling.

[ It's a mystery what disco balls are; Kano's never seen on in person before, and is kind of hoping it's made of solid metal and real glass instead of hollow and plastic. What matters most is that it's shiny! Material doesn't matter so long as it's annoyingly shiny. ]

Think prying it would be easier? Make sure you get a good grip on it, and then I can move one of the stools!

[ We can let gravity do the prying. ]

[It is annoyingly shiny! Also this sounds like a terrible idea which means Wei Wuxian is immediately on board.]

Ooh, good plan, good plan! Surely it can't be attached strongly enough that it could withstand the weight of an extra person!

[Famous last words... Anyway he'll stretch up even higher, extending his arms so he can get a good hold on this disco ball.]

—Okay! I think that's good enough!

[ Alright, let's do this! Kano grips the legs of the topmost stool in his hands and pauses, because he doesn't want Wei Wuxian to tear his arms out of his sockets or anything like that, so he just sort of slowly slides the stool out from under his feet until Wei Wuxian is left dangling.

The disco ball doesn't budge. It's nailed up there pretty well.

After a second's consideration, Kano moves the other stool aside too and then grabs onto Wei Wuxian's legs himself, a koala hug with his arms and legs wrapped around Wei Wuxian's so they can both dangle. ]

[Thanks for making it so his arms don't pop out of their sockets, he appreciates it! It's actually kind of fun dangling from the disco ball too, honestly.

With the weight of both himself and Kano his new koala appendage, the disco ball seems to... still not be budging very much! Hm. He continues to dangle uselessly, squinting up at the base of the disco ball where it attaches to the ceiling.]

—Is this part of the roof? It's really stuck on here, isn't it? I wonder if it's worth a fair amount.

[Anti-theft measures in place to stop hooligans like them from running off with expensive glass??]

[ Kano doesn't have quiet as much a distance to drop, so this amount of dangling isn't quite as terrifying as it could be. He also doesn't have to rely on just his arm strength as Wei Wuxian does, getting to use both arms and legs to hold on, so this is fine. He'll be fine. ]

I wonder... How 'bout you try swinging us back and forth a little? I bet it's just barely hanging in there, and we just gotta jiggle it loose!

[Just a couple of madlads making bad decisions in this chilis tonight.]

Hm, do you think so? [He'll give it a little try, swinging his legs (and Kano) out a bit - partially to test his grip, too. HIS ARM STRENGTH ISN'T WHAT IT ONCE WAS even though he's hanging on admirably.

That said, once they get a tiny bit of momentum, the disco ball does indeed creak ominously.]

—Oh! You might be right about that! Hold on, let's give this a good try. Swing a little too, would you? Otherwise my hands might slip and we'll both snap our spines in half, haha.

Haha! That'd be pretty bad! Gotcha, gotcha, I'm swinging~

[ He doesn't not swing, because he can't really do that in a koala hold, but he will send Wei Wuxian good thoughts and wish him the best and hopes they'll both escape this with their spines intact. ]

[That's GOOD ENOUGH!! An effort was made. Somehow, despite his twink arms and pitiable core strength, he manages to get a little more momentum! The ball creaks even more ominously and a shower of plaster rains down as a couple of the bolts securing it in place start to buckle.]

I think we're getting somewhere—! Brace for a landing, just in case!

[They should have set up a landing pad before... doing this...]

[ The ground will have to be Kano's landing pad and he will have to be Wei Wuxian's, because he doesn't even get the chance to open his mouth to reply before the ceiling gives and they plummet a whole... three feet to the ground, I guess, idk how tall train cars are, but it's a three foot fall they have to brace for along with half the ceiling caving in and smashing over their heads.

Wei Wuxian had better protect that disco ball with his life so he doesn't get stabbed with glass shards. ]

[Oh hm well now hopefully they won't be taken to the principle pillar's office for high crimes and misdemeanors and property damage. OOPS.

Wei Wuxian does indeed protect the disco ball but it's more or less an accident. He is, unfortunately, a caring soul beneath his gremlin exterior so as soon as they start to fall he twists midair so he's facing Kano. His non-disco-ball-clutching hand moves to cover the back of his head so he doesn't whack it on the ground and he uses his back as a SHIELD from all the stupid debris crashing down around them. GOD.

The disco ball remains safely tucked underneath his other arm, and it is just about the only thing left unscathed. ANYWAY AFTER A VOLLEY OF COUGHS as his mouth fills with roof dust:]

—Are you okay?! Are you hurt—? That came down faster than I expected!

[ Kano instinctively armadillos when he feels them fall, ducking his head while still clutched around Wei Wuxian's legs so that, despite everything else, he can protect this man's legs. Wei Wuxian may have his spine snapped in half or his skull fractured by an errant piece of ceiling tile, but by god Kano will not let any harm come to these legs under his protect.

That he immediately lets go of when he hits the ground, because ouch. ]

...ugh...

[ Words are hard, so Kano first makes a dying noise to let Wei Wuxian know that he's dying but not yet dead, until he can also catch his breath. Cough cough wheeeeeze ]

Haha, wow, it really worked... Ceiling balls are no match for our duo!!

[Thank you, Kano, for your brave and kind services.

He's sitting upright as quickly as possible, one hand on Kano's shoulder as he checks him over for any scrapes or cuts or signs of concussion. SOMETIMES YOU JUST DIE TO GET A CEILING BALL it's fine. It's the dying part that's important.]

You could say that again! Treasure this one well, though - I feel like we shouldn't test our luck a second time.
